Sue and I drove up to Dublin to pick up Heather and her two cats. Both of these big boys fit in the same carrier.. due to the compatibility of their personalities and the physical need to haul just one cat carrier.
Friday night was a hot one. It got to 103 in the valley and it was 97 in the Livermore valley. The animals and the people were very happy to get into the car and fell the cool of the air conditioner.
Linzi was headed down to. We thought that she might be delayed waiting for us at the Merced station but no.. we were within 5 minutes of her arrival as a previous train had hit a car and her train from Sacramento had been held.
Sean is headed down today. We are finally going to have the man and woman power to get this house back in shape so that we can maintain.
Linzi and Heather are hatching plans for areas and tasks to be completed. So we are hopeful that this can me accomplished.
Dad called eariler this week. He has completed the framing of three of our paintings. The big one is one that Linzi painted for us of our wedding reception and drinking with elbows connected the lime green punch of the party.
I have been following the Dem convention in Denver. I liked the public Tv version of it because the talking heads were looking at it historically.. and more of the splinter or secondary speeches were provided in the coverage.
I am hopeful that the Hillary supporters will bury their grudge and join for the Obama supporters so that change can happen in this country. Yes we can.. etc etc. Being and coaching public speech allowed me some significant pleasure in all of the speeches given. Especially interesting was how even in carrying the same lines and concepts they were so different.
Hats off to sister Kelly who is digging in her own accumulations this weekend. We will be with you soon to help. And both of the girls have committed to helping too.
Love

Ted Kennedy and the Dem convention
The afternoon started with a Nancy Pelosie speech.. As the TV commentator said.. it just pointed out the difference between the parties. That is where it needed to go. There were even parts with audience participation.
Jimmy Carter rose to the platform with his wife. He had a film about rebuilding after the hurricane and the lack of governmental support the cuurent administration had provided.
He did not speak but was available for round table conversation after it with the commentators. He was most concerned about the loss of respect that we have encounter around the world due to this war and how we treated our prisoners. He did not want to dwell in that area however.
The next speaker was Jessie Jackson Jr. he gave a wonderfully powerful speech. It had roots in the pulpit and it was a stinging indictment of the current administration.
What followed next was a marvelous speech by Caroline Kennedy, a film tribute to Ted Kennedy and then unbelievably, Ted took the stand and reminded people what we as Democrats stand for. Despite his brain cancer diagnosis, he provided the views a first class political speech to fire up the troops that will make the change and give us hope. He still is one of the best speakers around. Some people remember the images of past conventions that were reprized in this speech. It still brought tears to my eyes.

Reverting to old ways
This weekend along with going to Sacramento, I put up a few new pages on the reunion webstie of a reunion that I didn't go to. The 20th. The photos were scanned by a fellow class member that lives in Temecula and sent to me via attachment.on an Email. I cleaned up the photos, from whole page scans and parsed them out on web pages. This would not have been possible 20 years ago.
The new web design programs allow the designer to use Cascading Style Sheets to define text and other elements on the page. The best way is to use tables and design using inbedded ones to give pages that layered look that is so popular now. When it comes to photos, that is more work than i wanted to engage in for the time being. So I went back to the old way of Go line design where you cast a grid and size the grid and then place the photos on the grid to line them up.
I had to go make and do a little support from Lynda.com to remember how to do even that. It seems at my age that it takes less to forget something than it does to learn something.. oh well.

Thai and Anni
We celebrated our anniversary up in Sacramento this weekend. We previously celebrated our first anniversay in Sacramento 37 years ago. Back then we arrived in town looking for a place to stay (no internet reservation) and drove around town for an hour and a half trying to find a place. We finally found an auto courtyard near the current 99 elevated freeway connection. It was okay.. but it should a lack on understand of how Sacramento is laid out.
Finding a hotel was not a problem this time. We had reservations at the Holiday Inn Express in downtown. For a Saturday night during Fair time we got a great deal at 59dollars. It even included breakfast the next AM and a very clean room. We used Hotwire to book and pay through paypal.. very neat.
Saturday Am we arrived in Sacramento.. Sue is still having a heard time sleeping at night so she took a nap and we scouted out a great "by the piece" pizza place nearby. We picked her up and took her Goodwill thriftstore shopping out at the Goodwill by Arden Fair. We found about 50 dollars worth of stuff that had to follow us home.
Sue finished up her nap while I took the girls to Costco. Linzi doesn't have a car so when one is available.. she has some serious shopping at Safeway or Costco to do.
When we arrived back to her place we gave Cammie and Dom a call but didn't get them. The challenge was laid down to find a series of Thai dishes that mom would like (not big on ginger and absolutely no cilantro). The girls conjured up a respectable menu and called in the order. Linzi and I picked it up on foot and carried it the 10 blocks home. It was great. I like asian pork and what was ordered fulfilled my interest. Heather ordered up a spicy salad (larg.. or something like that) that mom would not try.. its okay.. but I thought was great. Linzi ordered an orange (or is it red) curry and some safe saatay. Great dinner topped off with sticky rice, and mango pieces. Mom really went for that. We had enough left over for Sean when he finished is magic judging at the store that night.
This morning we were picked up by linzi. We headed over to Amtrak to get Heather on the train back home. Se had a great time socializing at Starbucks before Heather had to catch the train home.
We had a great trip.. and got to see a house that Linzi and Sean are considering. Overall a great way to spend the time with the girls in Sacramento.
Hope you had a great weekend too.

Hot time in Valley
Its heating up again. Linzi is quick to point out that it is up to 20 degrees cooler in Sac town. It is also at least 20 degrees cooler than Sacratomato in SF.
The heat is wearing me out.. or is it the first long week of the year with kids. We were practicing ways to say things in a nice way today. It is easy for 9th graders to to put each other down with verbal nuances. Then the return gets nasty and they wonder why people are always shouting at them.
I got the postcards back from Moo of the Disney photos I took. They turned out pretty nice. Some of my readers may look for one in their mailbox. I think that they will serve as thank you cards.
I talked to the auto dealer today and they said that I had to have the car towed down to them to rekey it. They can do it within a half a day using vin numbers. I guess the keys are coordinated with the serial number of the car. That means they won't have to yank out the locks and replace them and re-key. They can look up the key using the vin number to guide the key machine.. pretty fancy.
Tomorrow is Friday and we are set to play Texas 5 second hold em. Some of the students from last year are anticipating this game.. it is their favorite. Basically I give them a question that I am sure that they know the answer. They have to sit on the answer until 5 seconds has elapsed.
We will see how well they do.
Have a great Friday.. Go USA at the Olympics

Its about time!
School is in. The Olympics are on TV. I have been working on high school reunion Birthday celebrations, laziness.. there are lots of reasons why you haven't been informed... so get over it.. ha
Kelly wrote me a beautiful tribute in her blog. She means a whole lot to me too. We have gone through many things together. Its always nice to know that there is another speechy in the family. She also sent me a book from Amazon called all cats have Aspergers, and a audiobook about how Starbucks saving a poor guy's life.. should be a great read.. or rather listen.
Niece Cammy sent me a shout out in her blog with an eggplant recipe.. yum.
Niece Acacia sent over a really special chocolate square from Pete's.. double yum and thank you!
My other sister, MSB and her husband Bob took mom and dad over the hill to celebrate my birthday at Hometown Buffet. They also had a couple of nice gifts.. a shirt and a walkable radio.. thanks to you too.
The girls were down to see us last weekend and help polish off mom's cherry chip birthday cake with cream cheese frosting. They gave us 50 dollars worth of movie tickets.. wow.
Sue let me buy the camera of my dreams.. at least this month's dream. It is a cannon 790is. It takes 10mega pixel photos. it has motion compensation and it has face detection. Take a look at some of the results in the Stanislaus County Fair photos and the Disneyland photos in the Flickr blog area beside this.
School is back in session. I am out in a portable in the afternoon campus. This would be good if I could figure out how to get the cool on.
Still the keys have not shown up for the Escape. I guess I will have to take the plunge and admit to the dealer that I do not have the keys. Can they rekey the car.
The last couple of days have been tolerable outside.. high 80's.
I hope you are having a great week..
Love

How I learned to Sail
At the encouragement of my daughter in her blog..(see the side bar) I am relating the story of how I learned to sail.
In the 8th grade my dad was the VP. The counselor and the school had a beautiful lagoon side home in Sausalito. She offered to have her husband teach me how to sail. So I learned from him and the little El Torro (a total 8 foot long single sailed dingy) the ins and outs of sailing.
I was hooked. Together we were both too big for the little boat but somehow I learned and we didn't get too too much wet.
Dad had joined a stock club when he was teaching in the Jr. High. Somehow this stock club had made some good choices and their was actually about 500 free dollars to spend on a boat. I searched the want ads like crazy for a boat that would fit our needs as Dad was determined to spend this money on something fun.
We looked at old mossy Lido 14s and out of sync snipes, and we often went down to Lake Vasona in Los Gatos and rented a Chrysler boat. It was a jewel. They were about 16 feet long and fiberglass. I could sail it up one side and down the other. We then decided that we were after a sloop on that experience. The Chrysler boats were way out of our leage. Most of them were around 3000 dollars.
Somehow Puff came up for sale. We took off and bought it.. Dad even negotiated a sail on the bay with owner's new boat.. a 54 foot boat with a boom on its jib. He thought it was a great chance to get a crew and sail. It was set up for him to sail by himself but it was really much more fun when you have a crew. This is true with all sailing.
We waited and waited for a trailer to come in. That winter the snows had pounded the Sierras and stuff like that took forever to get over. In the mean time we rented a trailer and took puff to her home waters.. Merced Lake by San Francisco State University. Dad bought the trailer out of money he saved from home teaching.
The first time we put puff in.. the wind came up and dad was on the wrong side of the boat and he nearly bit it. and so did the boat. Puff was a good learners boat.. so I shoved the tiller had to the right and she came around into the wind. Dad was a little shook up after that and so was i. I was as close as we ever came to dumping the boat.
We had many fun times with "puff" we trailered her to the half moon bay. We even sailed her int he lagoons around Palo Alto when they were shipping Napalm out for the Viet Nam War. They were not too happy to see a sailboat our running around their docks. We went back to Vasonia and even raced her a couple of times in Lake Merit in Oakland.
One race we almost won until the tiller broke off the ruder. We were leading and dad got back and tried to steer it while I tried to control the main sheet. We ended up last. It was still great fun.
Thanks for letting me share my memories of sailing..

Back to Work Monday Meetings
I am totally mesmerized by the Olympics. I know this happens every two years. I am glued to the TV even when I do not want to be. This is dangerous.
School starts on Monday, Kids will be in the classes Wednesday. Stress and more stress.
I tell myself don't look back. Just because you didn't do all that you wanted to do this summer it doesn't make it a failure. Man I could have done more.
Push it forward. Become better organized. It will have to happen this year.
My we had a great vacation. Check all the photos on the flickr.. connect by clicking on the the sidebar.
Love you all

Dinning with the Summer Workshops at UCLA
Sue and I had a delightful time at the cafeteria at UCLA.
This year there didn't seem to be as many cheerleaders at camp as last. The majority of others dining at the cafeteria were SIG groups. These are gifted kid camps. Most of them were respectful to us older folks. There conversations were very interesting. One boy was telling in a rather patronizing voice to another.. "Well the indians in the United States... "
His collegue answered "I don't need you to give me a history lesson on this.." and neither one took offense at the other for bringing up the obvious.
This is indeed a different conversation than the cheerleader one which usually revolves around whom did what to whom or whom committed the fashion mistake.
We had good food. Hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza were always available as choices for lunch or dinner as well since it was in buffet form were a starch bar with browned potatoes or plantains, roasted vegetables including tofu, rice in in its many ethnic forms and soups. The salad bar was more than adequate with hard boiled eggs and the usual delights. The pasta bar usually had two choices, one vegetarian and the other meat. The Euro bar had a variety of choices, some of them were not very Euro. Sweet and sour chicken was good and its equivalent in tofu. One lunch had paella with muscles and tiny bay shrimp and scallops. Sue wasn't thrilled with the Thai salad that came with a saffron noodle piece and some mint flavored chicken pieces with red onion. The desert area had lots of sugar free items and then some that were pretty high in sugar.. baklava. Small donuts and twists were there as well as bananas and fresh fruit.
Overall it was a great bargain for Sue's part.. we paid for her food and the unit picked up mine. 200 dollars. 6 days of food 15 meals we didn't need to make or clean up after.
She only missed 2 meals the entire time we were there.
Our room had a TV and we could manage the coolness of our own air conditioner. The bathroom was handicapped enhanced but was missed the chair. We borrowed the chair from the front and used it for the shower.
We had a very quiet time there and the overall accommodations were excellent for a camp style setting.
The content of the training was great.. delivered in a little speedy manner for most. That was why it was important that people had some experience at the table to take advantage of the power that was trained. The group this year was very appropriate to the task. We had three people in our simulations that had been spokespersons at the table. Only one had had only one year at the table. I thanked the leader for being so touch in setting up the requirements and filling the candidates for the conference with people that met those requirements. She said that it was tough as CTA wanted to include others that did not fit the requirements. Our simulations had us going agaist our trainers who played the school management team. Last year half of the team was management and the other was teachers. A big component this year was the inclusion of strategic planning at the table and for organizing.
The trainers were each very high powered people. Each had a different approach to the issues and we grew by each of their expertise and take. We did not get bogged down with a few chapters telling their war stories. This is a particularly vulnerable area for a group like this. We used a "parking lot" for people to put their specific question up with sticky notes. They were then addressed by the trainers who had specific interest in that area. This was done at the end of each day, and when we came back as a group from lunch.
Overall it was a great experience and a credit to CTA who took the info from last year's training and reworked it and made it better.

Back from LA battered and Bruised
Its good to be home. UCLA without traffic is only 4 and half hours away. But each of those minutes you need to be on your toes.
We decided to do one more trip to big D on Wednesday night. I had been in conference for the day and Sue had been resting up to go. We hit the road at 5:30. It took us over an hour to get there. We had to stop and get some gas near the Howard Hughes flyway on the 405. It was kind of exciting to get back on. Big D was crowded even at night. We made our way through CA adventure and everyone was cuing up for the Electrical Parade. We were interesting in another soaring over CA trip. Line was too long.. about an hour. We worked our way over to peter pan.. Mom's favorite. She sang along as we "flew " over London. As we were ready to get something to eat.. we headed over to the Bear Jamboree. We hadn't had a hamburger all week so we were low on the hamburger scale. The y were roping off for fantasia.. Sue and I split so that she could do some shopping on her own.. fireworks happened.. She was at the foot of the castle and when it was over.. she forgot or didn't see the curb. She went over and the chair landed on her. folks in the crowd helped her up and righted the chair. She has a strained wrist and very sore shoulder. The chair still works.. I was waiting for her at the Carnation plaza and didn't have a chance to help much. I bought her a caramel apple on main street and we headed back to UCLA. I can hardly wait to get the photos up on Flickr. I will alert you when they are ready. Sue is doing better today, We left UCLA and the 405 at 11am today.
cats were very happy to see us too.

I bought her a caramel apple on main street and we headed back to UCLA. I can hardly wait to get the photos up on Flickr. I will alert you when they are ready. Sue is doing better today, We left UCLA and the 405 at 11am today.
cats were very happy to see us too.
