The first time I have come across this expression. Do you know what it means? In the dictionary it means the turn of the century. The meaning coming from a turn of the century where life was less exciting and pleasurable.
The way it is used most frequently is to denote decadence...
I have started to read a very interesting book in which it appears.. Imperial in the Emerald City. I just got it at Costco. It is about Iraq and being inside Iraq's green zone. It has won or been in the running for several prestigious book awards. So how was it used in this book?

These were exceptions. Most people in the palace had simply given up, seeking instead the solace and fin de siécle merriment of the pool..

Fin de siècle is French for "end of the century," also implying the end of an era.
I like it alot, I had never heard of it. I can relate it to the last days of Rome. Since you read the rise and fall of the roman empire.... ::grin::: when you were in the sixth grade? (such a smart young man)
I went to Barnes & Nobles to buy Moleskin notebooks...and the family card has expired... !!! Actually I was at the Pruneyard B & N and I thought about what a good time we had at the wedding...and the afterparty at the Brewery! (good times!)
